Exploring Phang Nga Bay

A bay of turquoise waters and thousands of limestone formations jutting high in the sky. Island-hopping and the opportunity to catch the occasional glimpse of a pod of skipping dolphins. Phang Nga Bay is famous the world over for its astounding beauty. Charter a luxury yacht or sailboat and catch the sea breeze. Paddle a sea canoe along small islands and glide on a catamaran under a brilliant blue sky. Revel in nature, explore caves and walk along stretches of pristine beach.

Yachting

Charter a luxury yacht from the Royal Phuket Marina (Tel: 07 6360 8114) and set your vision on one of many jewel-like islands along the bay. The marina is one of the finest in the whole region, and is a treasure trove of guidance for your exploration of some 1000 islands, many created from ancient coral reefs dating back some 250 million years old.

Sea Kayaking

Choose a sea kayak tour, where a speedboat whisks you a short distance from Anantara to explore deserted islands, hidden lagoons and mangrove swamps.  The ‘hongs’, a beautiful feature to Phang Nga Bay, are caves through the limestone. Gradually created by water erosion over thousands of years, they’re best explored in a sea kayak. Your guides will light the way until you emerge into the midday sun.

Rock Climbing

Ancient coral reefs, full of nooks and crannies, make for ideal climbing conditions. With the geological formations soaring into the sky, the only way to reach a viewpoint is straight up. Try this exhilarating sport of graceful moves, flexibility and mental agility. There are a few options in Phuket, or head to Krabi province, especially Koh Phi Phi, a stupendous island only an hour boat ride from Phuket. One cliff face has over 30 courses, perfect for the novice or advanced climber. Climbing requires little more than will and determination, and your ability to attain new heights will surprise you.

Diving in the Similan Islands

Raw boulders and jungle-clad island interiors interspersed by long stretches of powder-fine sands. Shallow reef waters of vivid turquoise, full of diverse life. The Similan Marine National Park houses Thailand’s most pristine coral reefs and ensures their longevity for generations. The Similans are ideal for beginning divers, with clear waters stretching to depths of about 40 metres. In addition to abundant sightings of sea cucumbers, sea urchins, butterfly fish, parrotfish and manta rays, you might be lucky to spot the world’s largest fish species – the whale shark – a harmless plankton-eating creature. With the PADI-certified dive courses in all levels, the Similans are the perfect place to start diving or continue your schooling with open water diving, advanced certifications and more.
