Exploring Phuket
Get ready to explore Phuket at your own pace. If you’d like to get far off the beaten path, consider renting a car. Agencies based at the airport offer sedans, jeeps or luxury vehicles for hire, but make sure you are accustomed to driving on the left-hand side of the road! Otherwise, you can hire a taxi for single trips or a car with driver for daylong excursions. The public buses and ‘songthaews’, or Thai passenger vehicles, are useful for getting around popular points on the island and connect Phuket Town with the various beaches. Or, zip around in the ‘tuk-tuk’, that open-air, three-wheeled motorised cart that has become a symbol of Thailand! Every visitor should try this rustic vehicle at least once. ‘Tuk-tuk’ describes the sound the engine makes – listen and see if you agree!
